My Case Study for
ARTG 480/482 project:
April, 2024
Intro
Everything here was created for a two semester long project. The first semester was dedicated to just research and information gathering. While the second semester was about taking our research and ideas and designing solutions to the problem we want to solve.
There is a noticeable and recorded bias when it comes to neurodivergent people in the workplace. Whether it be an invisible bias or just a lack of knowledge, the unemployment rate is much higher.
I’ve created Mindset Bridge as a tool for management and HR to use. Instead of trying to force neurodivergent people into acting like everyone else this tool is designed to inform and elevate the skills they can bring to the table.
I had originally started by looking into how difficult it is for neurodivergent people to get diagnosed but as I kept reading and looking I found myself drawn more and more towards the difficulty in the workplace and school. It’s stemming from the same goal, neurodivergent people being misunderstood. It just tackles a different part of the problem.
I decided on narrowing in on neurotypical HR and management in the workplace. I wanted to design items that could fit in the workplace. They needed to be professional, but I couldn’t let it get too corporate. I needed to make sure both sides of the coin could interact with these resources and find use from them and not be put off.
Information is my biggest currency. My designs needed to inform while not making the audience feel stupid or make the audience think the ideas and design are childish.
Defined below is two words that are thrown around a lot. Taking a chance to read and take in their definition will help in understanding the issue better.
Neurodivergent:
Neurodivergent is a non-medical umbrella term that is used to describe when the brain functions and learns differently to what is considered typical. For example, autism, dyslexia, and ADHD are some of the more common examples.
Neurotypical:
A word used to describe people who’s brain functions and work in a similar way to their peers. Someone who is not neurodivergent.
Main Design Elements
Myth vs fact cards
These cards are designed to fit in your pocket for easy convenience. On one side is a common myth that relates to neurodivergence, and on the other side in the fact behind that myth.
Brochure
The brochure is only a couple panels but it’s packed with lots of useful information. Accessibility options are a must have in a work environment that supports neurodivergent individuals.
Posters
Poster are a big part of marketing. I wanted to keep all the design elements feeling similar so the posters are based off the Myth vs Fact card. The biggest text is supposed to be a question that makes you want to read the rest of it so you can figure out the answer.
Web Design
The web page is one of the most important design elements I made, as that’s where all the information is held. It provides information on neurodivergence and also links you to the other design elements.
FinaL Deliverable
A booklet was the final deliverable needed for this project. It is made to show off your design deliverables and explain your process. The booklet is made so the viewer can pick it up and read through it with no context of the project and walk away with a decent understanding.
